DISH 2018: Judges Announcement and Agenda Release

November 21, 2018

Makati, Phillippines (November 20, 2018) – In spite of the times, the first ever community-led blockchain startup challenge in Philippines, DISH 2018, is starting strong. The landmark blockchain hackathon has managed to bring in 10 groups of motivated and talented individuals from all walks of tech startup life, as the attendees are almost exactly evenly split between technicals, non-technicals, and hybrids! Half of the groups have 5 members each, though group size is ranging from as small as 3-persons teams to as large as 6-persons.

To oversee and appraise the hard work of these driven individuals, we present the panel of judges for DISH 2018. For our panel of judges (who are, to our great honor, also the event’s mentors), we are proud to present a crew of experts: Chris Verceles, Caspar Oostendorp, Gautam Anand, and Mark Vernon. Engineers, coders and technical specialists with decades of work on their belts, these five are as experienced with tech as they are experienced with the necessary business acumen that accompanies every startup. Their judgment and mentorship are a great addition and a shining point of our event.

Both our judge, mentor and organiser, Chris Verceles is the current CTO and a Co-founder of Lifemesh, a blockchain humanitarian platform built on Ethereum. He has worked on all things tech in the last 11 years, holding down positions as a Full-stack and Blockchain dev at Consensys as well as a blockchain community lead at BlockDevs Asia. Being the huge part of how DISH 2018 came to be, Chris believes that the hackathon can help instigate a fire that will culminate in a more vibrant local blockchain community in Manila, since there still aren’t many blockchain developers here yet. As Chris has observed that the local scene was more businesses and meetup group than coders at the moment, “it’ll be harder for us to find partners down the line.”

Meanwhile, from the tech entrepreneurship side, we have Caspar Oostendorp as our judge and mentor, who has spent his last two decades building and running tech businesses both in the Netherlands and the Philippines. A formidable businessman, Caspar is also coder in his own right and is very involved in the blockchain community in the Philippines through education and event organizing.

Last but not the least, we have our software engineer judge – a purist coder, Gautam Anand. In the past year, his focus has been writing and security auditing smart contracts, but Anand has been a tech advisor and developer team leader for projects from web backends to machine learning and IoT.

All the judges, as will our teams, our support personnel and sponsors will operate throughout DISH 2018 along the agendas below. There will be two different, though highly intertwined, agendas for our hackathon: one for the Developer challenge, and the other for the Business (Biz) challenge. The Developer and Biz tracks will run in parallel for two days, starting on Saturday, 24th November.
