Samsung SDS revealed that it has partnered with Telensa — a UK-based smart city solutions provider — to develop a cloud platform as part of smart city infrastructure. The “Urban Data Project” will first be implemented in South Korea and then expanded to other countries in the region, before launching services in the United States.
According to IoT Tech News, the Samsung subsidiary disclosed that with the project, smart cities will be able to save costs related to energy management while gaining access to a large ecosystem of sensor applications managed by the Telensa PLANet streetlight control application and developed for the Samsung SDS Brightics IoT platform.
Sean Im, Senior Vice President of Solution Business Division at Samsung SDS, said, “We are delighted to be working with Telensa to enable cities to harness and protect their urban data assets on behalf of their citizens. Brightics IoT will provide effective data collection and analytics, which will lead to improved quality of life for citizens.”
He added that the expertise of the two companies will be honed with further opportunities to implement new technologies, such as blockchain and AI, in the system.
Other tech majors have been keen to develop platforms for smart cities. In April, Qualcomm Technologies introduced the firm’s accelerator aimed at gathering companies that use Qualcomm’s products to provide a website for the application of smart cities anywhere in the world.
Meanwhile in September 2018, at the IFA event in Berlin, Germany, Samsung unveiled products that utilize AI and IoT to offer more conveniences to customers, ranging from next-generation mobile phones, watches, refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions.
