Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority Launches Innovation Lab

April 29, 2019

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched its Maritime Innovation Lab (MIL), comprising both physical and digital aspects to serve as an innovative co-creation platform.

As reported by OpenGov Asia, the facility is expected to foster an environment allowing for experimentation and trialling innovative port services, as well as intelligent ship operations. It is also intended to support the Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map by encouraging open innovation and R&D collaborations among the industry, regulator, and research and technology communities.

The MIL was launched in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week 2019 as part of broader MPA Living Lab efforts.

The new developer space, located at PSA Vista, aims to accelerate the development of new operational ideas and systems while developing local technological capabilities in crucial areas. MIL will purportedly allow industry partners, research institutes and local universities to develop their own maritime capabilities and solutions.  Dr. Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, calls the facility “an important milestone” as Singapore seeks to establish itself as a global maritime hub for connectivity, innovation, and talent.\

Also launched was the Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System Lab (NGVTMS Lab), located within the MIL, which aims to realize the development of new vessel traffic capabilities, including an advanced communications system for exchanging data between ships and port authorities.

Additionally, the MPA has established a cross-agency Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Steering Committee to develop strategies and launched the Singapore Maritime Data Hub, a one-stop data repository for catalyzing the development and trialling of innovative maritime digital applications and services.
