Sony and Fujitsu to Use Blockchain in Education Units

March 12, 2019

Japanese IT equipment services company Fujitsu has announced that it is cooperating with the education units of multinational conglomerate Sony to experiment with the use of blockchain technology. The companies will apply blockchain to improve course records as well as student transcript data in their system.

Fujitsu revealed in a statement that the project is a joint venture between Sony Global Education Inc., Fujitsu Ltd., Fujitsu Research Institute, and Human Academy Co., Ltd.

Human Academy is a language institute for foreigners in Japan. Foreign students learning Japanese on the blockchain-based program will complete the course, “Nihongo Dojo,” which are preparatory lessons to help foreign students pass the “Nihongo Kentei”, a Japanese language proficiency test.

As part of the project, Fujitsu disclosed that it will provide a digital learning platform called “Fisdom,” as well as set up a blockchain cloud service to manage courses, monitor data, and certify students in the courses.

The IT firm stated, “The course platform [Fisdom] will collect data including test scores, Japanese conversational ability, and study time, and store them on a blockchain as a certificate. Human Academy […] will be able to accurately grasp the language ability of individual students based on this highly reliable data, by comparing the certificate data on the blockchain with the educational certificates submitted by the prospective students.”

Meanwhile, Fujitsu Research Institute is responsible for assessing the needs of educational institutes and determining appropriate business models to implement this technology more widely in the near future.

Outside of Japan, the implementation of blockchain in education has also been carried out in Malta, Bahrain, and the United States. In a notable case, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) issued blockchain-based digital certificates to more than 100 graduates in 2017.
